Racism, Misogyny, and the “Othello” Myth: Inter-racial Couples from Shakespeare to Spike Lee. By Celia R. Daileader. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005; pp. x+256, 6 illus. $70 cloth, $25.99 paper. - Volume 48 Issue 1 - Jacquelyn Y. McLendon
Daileader hopes to dispel preconceived emotional leanings about the Crusades, which he said students often bring to the class either seeing the Crusades as completely bad or maybe not so bad. “Our job as professors is to get students to recognize these inclinations that they have and then to get students to work against them,” he said. Daileader is a great professor. There are weekly reading quizzes (which can be a bit tedious / oddly specific) and three overall papers, but overall the class is straightforward and fun. Daileader is a great lecturer and makes an interesting subject even more interesting. Daileader helpfully frames each lecture with a summary at the beginning and the end. He has a dry sense of humor and tells wry anecdotes and differing views of scholars all in a very engaging way. Because he is only focusing on one part of the Middle Ages, he was able to go a bit deeper than some courses or books on the period. Prof. Chris Daileader, Actor: Haze.
